New American Leaders Action Fund Announces Second Cohort of Michigan Endorsements Ahead of Primary Election

Earlier today, New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF) announced its endorsement of two New American candidates, Abraham Aiyash, candidate for Michigan State House of Representatives in District 9, and Rashida Tlaib, candidate for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District.

“Michigan needs leaders like Abraham Aiyash and Rashida Tlaib representing our communities,” said Basi Alonso, political director for New American Leaders Action Fund. “As lifelong members of our communities, they share our experiences and understand our struggles. They have organized alongside us and know what it will take to strengthen our democracy so that all people are heard and represented. Especially in this pivotal moment, as critical decisions on our rights move from the courts to legislatures, we need their fierce advocacy and leadership in the Michigan State House of Representatives and in Congress.”

With the addition of these two candidates, NALAF has endorsed a total of six candidates ahead of next week’s primary, including:

  • Abraham Aiyash; candidate for Michigan State House of Representatives, District 9

  • Stephanie Chang; candidate for Michigan State Senate, District 3

  • Ayesha Ghazi Edwin; candidate for Ann Arbor City Council, Ward 3

  • Bilal Hammoud; candidate for Michigan State House of Representatives, District 15

  • Rashida Tlaib; candidate for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District

  • Mai Xiong; candidate for Macomb County Commission, District 11

“As we face mounting assaults on the right to vote, reproductive freedoms, and rising white nationalist hate, the need for progressive and diverse leadership has never been more clear. This cohort of endorsees are exactly the kind of public servants that Michigan—and our democracy—needs,” she continued.

“The time for politics as usual is over. And thanks to candidates like Abraham Aiyash, Stephanie Chang, Ayesha Ghazi Edwin, Bilal Hammoud, Rashida Tlaib, and Mai Xiong, we know that we are one step closer to welcoming a new era of progressive leadership at every level of government. We are proud to stand with them and create a democracy that works for and represents all of us.”
