After Historic Wins in 2021, New American Leaders Action Fund Announces Next Cohort of Michigan Endorsements

Earlier today, New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF) announced its newest slate of endorsed candidates, focusing on trailblazing immigrant candidates in Michigan. Their 2022 Michigan endorsee cohort includes:

  • Stephanie Chang; candidate for Michigan State Senate, District 3

  • Ayesha Ghazi Edwin; candidate for Ann Arbor City Council, Ward 3

  • Bilal Hammoud; candidate for Michigan State House of Representatives, District 15

  • Mai Xiong; candidate for Macomb County Commission, District 11

“In 2021, New Americans across the country stepped up to run and win in key elections, making history by becoming ‘firsts’ in their communities. In Michigan, leaders like Abdullah Hammoud—the first Arab American mayor of Dearborn—showed that our communities are ready for a new cohort of fierce, progressive leaders. Now, in this critical midterm election cycle, we are thrilled to see more New Americans stepping up to join immigrant leaders like Mayor Hammoud in strengthening our democracy by running for office and challenging outdated ideas on who can and should lead in elected office,” said Basi Alonso, political director for New American Leaders Action Fund.

“Our newest cohort of Michigan endorsees are exactly the kind of public servants our democracy needs. Instead of focusing on talking points and partisan games, NALAF’s endorsees are running progressive campaigns that empower their communities and build lasting civic engagement,” she continued. “We know that once in office, they will continue to use their authentic experiences and shared immigrant identities to advocate for policies that create a more inclusive future for us all.”

“The time for politics as usual is over. And thanks to candidates like Stephanie Chang, Ayesha Ghazi Edwin, Bilal Hammoud, and Mai Xiong, we know that we are one step closer to welcoming a new era of progressive leadership at every level of government. We are proud to stand with them and create a democracy that works for and represents all of us.”
