Immigrant Leader: “Kamala Harris Gave a Voice to New Americans and Represented the Promise of America”

Last night, Senator Kamala Harris spoke at the Democratic National Convention as the first ever Black and South Asian American woman nominated as vice president. In response to her historic address, New American Leaders Action Fund Founder and President Sayu Bhojwani released the following statement:

“Rooting her speech in her experiences as a Black, South Asian woman and daughter of immigrants, Kamala Harris gave a voice to all of us who have been silenced and unseen in our democracy.

“For the first time, women of color saw ourselves on the presidential stage. We were heard; our voices hopeful and vision clear. We were seen; our power and potential recognized after centuries of oppression and hate. And for one of the first times in recent memory, our children saw the opportunities and promise their lives hold.

“Last night, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, another pillar of white, male supremacy was brought down because of Kamala Harris. She represents the promise of America. In honor of those who came before her to make this moment possible and the ones who come after us, it is our duty to do as Kamala asked and fight with conviction, hope, and confidence in ourselves, each other and the America we love. This November, New Americans and women of color will use our power to elect the only ticket that represents us and our communities. We are the backbone of our democracy and will proudly use our political power to once again make history by electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”
