Immigrant Leader: Harris’ VP Nomination Signals Democrats Recognize That New Americans Are the Key to Victory

New York — Moments ago, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden announced that California Senator Kamala Harris is his running mate and choice for vice president. Responding to the announcement, New American Leaders Action Fund Founder and President Sayu Bhojwani issued the following statement.

“Kamala Harris’ nomination marks a seismic shift in our democracy. After 244 years of having only pale, stale and male representation in the vice president’s office, we finally have a Black woman, and daughter of immigrants, ready to lead as vice president and bring us a step closer to having an inclusive democracy.

“As a community of New Americans and people of color, we watch our experiences get left out of policy responses over and over again. Now, Kamala Harris has the opportunity to amplify our communities’ voices on the presidential stage and represent our lived experiences from the campaign trail all the way to the White House.

“By selecting Senator Harris as the vice presidential nominee, Vice President Biden’s campaign has not only chosen a smart and thoughtful leader, but also recognized the long-term commitment of Black women to the Democratic party and the growing political power of New Americans. Our communities are the key to victory for any candidate in 2020 and beyond. We are committed to working with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to ensure that Trump and his white nationalist supporters are voted out of office on November 3rd.”
