New American Women Win Massachusetts Primary, Changing the Face of Leadership in the State House
Yesterday, while attention was focused on the hotly contested U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts, voters made decisions in key local races across the state. In response to the results, New American Leaders Action Fund Founder and President Sayu Bhojwani released the following statement:
“Last night’s Massachusetts primary proved that when women of color run, we win. Voters made history by electing Erika Uyterhoeven to serve as the first person of color to represent the 27th Middlesex District in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives. They also re-elected Tram Nguyen and Maria Robinson, the first Vietnamese American woman and Korean American woman, respectively, to serve in the Massachusetts State House.
“These fierce leaders represent the growing power of the New American majority. They are unafraid to share their authentic stories, run with progressive values, and challenge establishment ideas of who can and should lead.
“As a movement made up of women, New Americans, and BIPOC individuals, we have the power to swing elections, turn out voters in historic numbers, and change the face of leadership. We know that our communities, families, and lives are at stake this election. We won’t let our votes or voices be taken for granted and are committed to voting, organizing, and running for office to create the change our communities have been waiting for.”
New American Leaders Action Fund endorsed four candidates in local races, including:
Tram Nguyen; Massachusetts State House; 18th Essex District
Maria Robinson; Massachusetts State House; 6th Middlesex District
Ceylan Rowe; Massachusetts State House; 12th Worcester District
Erika Uyterhoeven; Massachusetts State House; 27th Middlesex District
