New Americans: “Warnock and Ossoff Provide Hope That Our Country Can Heal from the Wound of White Supremacy”

After a historic victory for Democratic Senate candidates Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and following unprecedented domestic terrorism at the U.S. Capitol, New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF) Interim President Sara Le Brusq released the following statement:

“This week, the vast extremes in our country were further exposed. On one hand, we witnessed the horror of white nationalist insurrectionists storming the United States Capitol in a failed coup, spurred on by Trump’s lies and hateful agenda. And yet, even as we reckon with this attack, the election of two trailblazing candidates, Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff brings hope for our democracy.

“These candidates won their historic elections, becoming the first Black U.S. Senator to represent Georgia and the first millennial to serve in the United States’ Senate. They are the future of our country — bold, progressive and representative of our country’s diverse communities.

“As a community of New Americans, BIPOC community members and allies, we celebrate Rev. Warnock, Jon Ossoff and all that they represent. Their victories were made possible because of the hard work and record breaking turnout of people like us. They give us hope that even in traditionally conservative states like Georgia, people like us can run, win and lead; taking steps to help our country heal from the wound of white supremacy.

“Despite the horrors we have all witnessed this week, we know that our democracy has the potential to be of, for and by all people and we’ll stop at nothing to recognize our dream of a truly inclusive government. We call on all people — particularly those in elected office — to join us in healing our country and ending the deep-seated systemic white supremacy, anti-Blackness, xenophobia and hate that Trump preyed on to lead to this moment. We are committed to keeping up our growing momentum to stop Trump’s hate and open the door for even more people like us to run, win and lead.”
